Hymenoplasty
A Hymenoplasty (Hymen restoration surgery) is generally performed on women who have not had children, for ethnic, cultural, or religious reasons. The Hymen is a membrane of skin that sits in the lower half of the vagina. With first time intercourse, by a falling accident, or by using tampons, the hymen can tear. Most often, this tearing is accompanied by bleeding.
Hymenoplasty is performed using local anesthetic and is a simple procedure. It can be performed as a day case. The torn area has the upper layer of tissue removed so that when it is stitched back together, to form a ring, the area will fuse. The area is put back together as prior to the accident etc. The ring of membrane is made small enough so that on the first occurrence of intercourse, it will tear again and there will be some pain and bleeding as before.
